WHAT IS SPORPAK?

SPORPAK allows the testing of both faeces and pasture to provided information on the levels of Facial Eczema spores on your property and in your animals, allowing you to make informed treatment and management decisions.

WHY DO WE NEED SPORPAK?

Avoid expensive production losses as a result of Facial Eczema
  • Facial Eczema is difficult to diagnose as it causes both clinical and subclinical symptoms.
  • Only a small percentage of animals show clinical symptoms (~5%).
  • Subclinical effects include decreased fertility, weight loss and decreased milk production.
  • Measure spore incidence on pastures across your property using Pasture Spore Counts (PSC), allowing you to pre-emptively treat your stock before exposure.
  • Measure the quantity of spores actually ingested by stock by using Faecal Spore Counts (FSC). Because spores are not distributed evenly on pasture, it is difficult to gauge the quantity of spores that are actually being ingested, by testing your stock as well as monitoring your pasture levels you can more effectively treat the animals that are at most risk.
  • Help to avoid permanent liver damage to your stock.

SPORPAK is an effective way to monitor the spore levels on pasture and in faeces before they reach harmful levels. Once the exposure of stock has been assessed, appropriate preventative measures can be taken.

Regular monitoring in conjunction with existing farm management practices such as stock observation enable more accurate prevention measures and management of Facial Eczema.

WHAT CAN YOU TEST USING SPORPAK?

Faecal Spore Counts

Faecal spore counts (FSC) are the most effective way to measure the spore intake of your stock. FSC are easy to do and can be performed along with faecal egg counts (FEC).

Pasture Spore Counts

Use SPORPAK Pasture Spore Counts (PSC) to assess Facial Eczema risk before animals graze pasture. PSC can also be used to monitor rising spore levels on pasture and provide you with information so you can decide when to use preventative measures.

Faecal Spore Counting

FSC is:
  • An accurate assessment of actual spore intake.
  • Quick and cost effective.
FSC allows you to:
  • Monitor changes in spore ingestion by stock and identify when to take preventative action.
  • Protect your stock by using FSC in combination with PSC to aid in monitoring of pasture spore levels allowing you to manage your grazing to reduce exposure.

What animals can you test using SPORPAK?

  • Sheep
  • Cattle
  • Goats

Pasture Spore Counting

PSC is:
  • An accurate assessment of the spore levels on your pastures.
  • Quick and cost effective.
PSC allows you to:
  • Monitor changes in spore levels on your pasture allowing you to identify when to take preventative action.
  • Find ‘Hot Spots’ for spore activity on your farm by using continual monitoring, you can map which pastures have higher levels or levels that are rising quickly, this allows you to make informed decisions as far as stock movement, management and preventative treatment goes.
  • Protect your stock by using PSC in combination with FSC to aid in monitoring allowing you to manage your grazing to reduce exposure.

Facial Eczema is a devastating disease that causes irreversible liver damage as a result of ingestion of toxic spores. The combination of humid mild summers and increased irrigation have caused a dramatic increases in spore challenges.
